Tom Batiuk's winking so hard today that he may never get his left eyelid to work right again. But I'm not sure what it says about your comic strip when the funniest thing that happens in weeks is a character not dying horribly.
I am rather amused by today's Drabble. This has never happened before. I'm not entirely sure what to do.
My Cage is really on a roll lately.
There are times when I think that My Cage is maybe just a little too meta. But then it goes meta again, and I laugh again. And then the whole process repeats.
I am not the sort of person that merely enjoys meta humor for the sake of meta humor. It's not nearly as hip and edgy as people seem to think. That said, this is some good meta humor.

These comics each use pretty much the same gag, in which a mundane phrase becomes absurdly literal for comic effect. But the Pearls is quite a bit funnier, partially because the specific situation is more extreme, partially because Pig is just a funnier character than the tall one in Herb & Jamaal and partially because of the extra layer of meta in the final Pearls panel.
But they can't. Because they're cartoons and not real. Which means they're not actually standing there posing, either. So Billy should probably quit complaining.
When Beetle Bailey*, The Born Loser and The Family Circus are all using variations on the same joke, it is highly unlikely that the joke is funny or hip, no matter how meta it may be.
Over the Hedge is almost certainly the most meta strip around today, as illustrated here by the reference to the movie tie-in. That doesn't necessarily make it good, of course; it often seems to be trying too hard for its own good. But that at least means it's trying, which is more than can be said about most of the stuff in the comics section.
I kind of love the way this strip starts off so hackish and ends up so insular.
On a list of things I would expect to see in BC, a character from Pearls Before Swine would be very low indeed. Above, perhaps, only something funny.
